Interview with Kim Barry on 8.12.15
How long have you been with Tejas and when did you become the sole owner?
I’ve been here 23 1/2 years. And I’ve been one of the owners since ’99, and the sole owner since 2005.
What about this business do you love? Why is gun culture a passion for you?
Obviously, I love the fact that we have the freedom to keep and bear arms in this country. I love the fact that it’s a very empowering sport.
I love that our largest growing demographic is females and they love the fact that they can actually come into Tejas and talk to and meet with women because we do have women on staff here.
And, probably most of all, I love our customers. I love talking to our customers, I love serving our customers, teaching our customers … Read More »

What drew you to work at Tejas?
I wanted to work somewhere that seemed really enjoyable. I wanted a job inside, and with people. It was naturally a place where I would be around people, and sales, and with a team.
Has this met your hopes for a workplace?
It’s been good! I really like the challenge of, if we don’t have something or if I don’t know something. Every day I’m learning. I’m trying to figure out what people want and how to get it to them.
How do you go about learning the things you don’t know?
Google. Google and everyone who’s been here longer than me is a mentor, so if I have a question and I don’t know what to look up, [the Tejas crew] is pretty helpful in training me.
What seems to be … Read More »

Interview with Erica Quiroz on 6.25.15
How long have you been part of the Tejas team?
At February , I completed a year!
How did you come to join Tejas?
My husband was working for [Teak and Charlie’s] Jersey Girl [Pizza], he was going to ministry school at the time. That was cool: I hung around with [the JGP and Tejas crews] already before I even worked here.
It’s such a family between JGP and Tejas, isn’t it?
Yeah! It’s really all about each other!
I [had] got to know Kim, she’s just an awesome gal, awesome-awesome – I love her! And she asked me if I wanted to work here. I told her, ‘I have no experience in guns.’ I was afraid of guns! I was!
She [said], ‘Well, you’ll be working in the office. I’ll teach you. As … Read More »

How long have you been with Tejas?
What brought you to Tejas?
I like guns. I was friends with Gunner, who used to work here, and Cesar, who still does.
How long have you been into guns?
Since I can remember.
Do you have many family members into guns?
A lot of them. My dad really likes them, he’s never done much more with them than go hunting with them, but he really likes guns.
What kind of gun sportsman are you?
I do a lot more just going to the range than anything now.
What are your favorite types of firearms to use at the range?
Anything that goes BOOM! [chuckles]
You don’t have a preference?
Not really. I like semi-automatic versus bolt-action.
What are your favorite types of targets to shoot?
I really like Tannerite® or the targets you can play games on. There’s … Read More »
Shandy Heifner is the Tejas Office Manager, and daughter of owner, Kim.
Is Shandy your full name?
No, “Shandy” is short for Killashandra – my mom is crazy and she was reading a book while she was pregnant called Killashandra.
I’m not crazy, just bold!
Besides, she needed a unique name
to fit her unique personality!
Did you ever go by “Killashandra”?
Yes, in school I had to. I couldn’t write “Shandy,” I had to write Killashandra on my papers in Kindergarten – but no one ever calls me that [now]. I [do] have friends and family that would call me “Killa.” My name was supposed to be Ashley!
When did you start working at Tejas?
I guess I was about 9 – almost 16 years ago. I would just file, take out the trash, and vacuum.
What was it like growing up in a gun … Read More »
Tell me about your big family and where y’all come from.
My dad was in the oil field when he was having children so we were kind of all over the place at first. TeakAllen, my oldest brother, was born in Billings, Montana. Then there’s William who was born in Andrews, Texas. My little brother and myself were born in Grand Junction, Colorado, which we didn’t live there for very long. I think I was kindergarten-age when we moved to Idaho and then I’d been in Idaho till I was 22 or 23.
What was it like growing up in a house full of brothers?
It was fun. It was mostly exciting. It was like, ‘You can’t pick on your little brother, ‘cause I’ll beat you up,’ all the way down [the line]. If William picked on me, TeakAllen would beat him … Read More »
First of all, it should be noted that Cesar is a newlywed – he married Rosalinda on June 14! Congratulations, Cesar!
Cesar, does your wife enjoy shooting?
She’ll go out and shoot with me. She likes my Remington 870, she calls that one hers. [Grins.]
I hear you have another job in addition to Tejas, what is it?
I’m an EMT for Permian Basin Ambulance.
I also hear you’re a volunteer firefighter, who for?
West Odessa. Basically I respond to medical calls, fire calls out there. Either structure or grass – I’ve done a lot of grass fires. We were very busy last year. [I’d] get off work, go get a truck, be on a fire, be out there for long periods of time, come back, take a shower, then get called out for something else. It was just a very long summer.

What drew you to become a Tejas employee?
We [Kim and I] shot together at the Midland Shooters Association (MSA). I really just did it as a favor to begin with, just to help her get through a spot where she really didn’t have enough people to work…and I just never quit!
How often do you work?
I’m only a Saturday worker. I have a regular job [weekdays] from 8 to 5.
So you must really enjoy Tejas to give up one of your two days off, right?
I do! The perks of working here are pretty nice. Sometimes the discount on a firearm is more enticing than the actual paycheck. Which, usually, you don’t have much of a paycheck left if you work here! If you like guns and ammo, and you work at a place that sells all … Read More »
Snuffy, how did you get your nickname?
From an unfortunate experience with a can of Garretts Sweet Snuff…I got sicker than…[shakes his head]…wasn’t very sweet if you wanna know the truth. I’ve had the nickname since I was 12.
How long have you worked at Tejas?
Danged if I know! Either 17 or 18 years; I’ve lost count. Longer than I ever would’ve thought I’d still been here!
What do you like to hunt?
There’s not really anything I don’t like to hunt. Deer mostly ‘cuz that’s what’s here.
What did you think of hunting in South Africa?
[Snuffy went in June 2009 with his Tejas friends; they spent 14 days in Africa, hunting for 10. Flip through the South Africa photo album.]
I loved it. It was just a hoot. An absolute blast…I want to go back so bad I can’t hardly stand it.
Which South … Read More »
